So you’ve made it to the final stretch of pregnancy—your hospital bag is packed, your baby’s clothes are folded, and you’ve probably been asked “Any signs yet?” about 67 times this week.
If you’re feeling ready (or just reaaaally over being pregnant), you might be wondering if there’s a safe, natural way to give your body a little nudge.
Here’s the good news: there are!
And the even better news? Most of them feel good, are rooted in evidence or time-tested tradition, and connect you even more deeply with your incredible body.
Let’s dive into 8 beautiful, natural ways to encourage labour to start—gently, intuitively, and in alignment with your body and baby’s timing.
- Sexy Science
Yes, we’re going there. Semen contains prostaglandins (the same hormone used in medical inductions!) and orgasms release oxytocin—the love hormone that also stimulates contractions.
If you’re feeling up to it, intimacy can be a beautiful way to bond, relax, and gently get things moving. (Unless advised otherwise—always check with your provider!)
- Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
This isn’t a magic potion, but it IS a uterine tonic. Raspberry leaf tea may help tone the uterus and prepare it for more efficient contractions. Start slow in your third trimester and always check with your midwife before sipping.
- Move That Beautiful Body
Walking, dancing, hip circles on a birth ball, gentle squats—they’re all ways to encourage baby into a great position and help gravity do its thing.
Bonus: movement boosts circulation, eases back pain, and gives you a big hit of endorphins (your body’s natural pain relievers).
- Nipple Stimulation
This one’s powerful—stimulating the nipples can trigger your brain to release oxytocin, which may cause contractions.
It can be done manually, with a warm compress, or even with a breast pump. Caution: don’t overdo it—gentle, rhythmic, and always monitored if contractions begin.
- Dates (The Fruit, Not the Flings)
Studies show that eating 4–6 dates per day from 36 weeks may help soften the cervix and reduce the need for medical induction. Plus, they’re delicious and packed with energy—perfect for late pregnancy snacking.
- Evening Primrose Oil
Some mamas use this oil orally or vaginally to help ripen the cervix—but please only do so with medical guidance, especially if you’ve had a previous cesarean.
- Acupressure & Reflexology
Gentle pressure points around the ankles, hands, and back may help stimulate labor-related hormones and relieve tension.
Pro tip: a reflexology session at 39 weeks feels amazing whether or not it kickstarts labour.
- Breathe, Visualize, Connect
Your baby feels everything. When you’re relaxed, your body is more likely to produce oxytocin—the very hormone that initiates labour.
Dim the lights, listen to birth affirmations, visualize holding your baby, and talk to them. Tell them you’re ready. Often, they listen.
